Start with the actual loading location
Write down the street address, borough, date, time window and truck space requested. Distinguish a private driveway from a public curb, and street parking from occupying a sidewalk or another public area. A building loading bay needs management approval; it is not automatically reserved by a municipal permit.
Use the official borough instructions
The City’s moving-truck page explains procedures by borough. Fees, processing times, eligibility and signage requirements can differ. Check the current instructions for your address rather than relying on a citywide price in a blog. If the address is in Westmount, Laval or a South Shore municipality, use that municipality’s process instead.

Assign responsibility explicitly
Ask whether the customer or mover applies, supplies authorized signs and checks the space before loading. Keep confirmation available on moving day. Never treat cones, furniture or a neighbour’s promise as permission to obstruct a hydrant, transit stop or pedestrian route.
- Send the loading point and carry distance to the mover
- Confirm sign placement and applicable notice with the borough
- Check construction and snow-removal restrictions near the date
- Agree an alternative legal loading location
Gather the details the borough needs
Start with the precise address and the City’s borough-specific instructions linked below. Describe the date, expected loading period and space needed, using the mover’s vehicle information where available. Ask about the correct application process and any conditions for signage. Do not assume instructions for a Plateau address also cover Verdun, Lasalle or another municipality. The applicable authority and procedure depend on the actual location.
Assign responsibility for permits and signs
Record who applies, who pays, who places any required signs and who checks the loading area before arrival. Ask the mover what is included in the quote instead of assuming the truck booking includes street permissions. Share the permit or written instructions with the crew where relevant. If the building uses a private dock, check those rules separately; street authorisation does not automatically grant access to private property.
Loading permission is address-specific
Use the City’s borough selector and assign responsibility for permits and signs where required.
Have an assessed backup loading plan
If the planned space is obstructed, contact the responsible authority or property manager and the mover. Do not direct the driver onto a sidewalk, bike lane or other restricted area. Discuss any lawful alternate location and the added carry distance before proceeding. A longer route may affect handling and the quote; it should be assessed rather than discovered after the crew has carried the first load to the wrong entrance.
Check the exact borough and loading location
Use Montreal’s official moving-truck parking guidance to select the relevant borough and current procedure. Confirm whether permission or a reservation is required at the address and who will arrange it. A nearby empty space does not establish lawful loading access, and your building’s approval does not replace municipal requirements. Give the mover the intended stopping location and distance to the entrance, along with any height or street restrictions known to you. Ask the building manager about private loading areas separately. Keep the confirmation accessible on the day and tell the coordinator if the permitted location changes. Avoid applying a fee, notice period or sign arrangement from a different borough to your own address. The current location-specific instructions are more useful than a general citywide rule invented for convenience.
Truck access planning sheet
Check each address with its building and the relevant municipal information.
| Access detail | Evidence to collect | Question to resolve |

| Posted restrictions | Photos of signs for the planned time. | Do restrictions affect the loading window? |
| Space arrangement | Building or municipal confirmation, if applicable. | Who handles the required arrangement? |
| Truck dimensions | Vehicle length, height and turning needs. | Can the proposed vehicle reach the position? |
| Carrying route | Door distance, crossings and obstructions. | Is there a clear route for carrying items? |
