Two plans, with matching details
Keep the traveller’s identity, destination address and shipment information consistent. Tell the mover whether belongings travel separately from you. Immigration permission, personal travel and the shipment’s customs clearance should not be treated as a single approval.
Prepare the goods before sealing cartons
Review the current CBP guidance for unaccompanied goods and Form 3299. Eligibility and treatment depend on the goods and your circumstances. Flag regulated items before packing; do not assume a household inventory automatically authorizes plants, food, firearms or vehicles. See the documentation guide for primary links.

Make the U.S. destination ready
Request building receiving hours, elevator/dock details and any documentation the property manager needs. Tell the mover if the destination address is provisional. Agree storage or an alternate delivery plan before the shipment leaves if keys or access will not be ready.
Define your situation before choosing documents
A household moving to live in the United States, a temporary relocation and a shipment of newly purchased goods are not interchangeable descriptions. Explain your situation to the appropriate customs contact and consult the official CBP guidance linked below. Transport arrangements do not establish immigration eligibility or automatically determine the customs treatment of each item. Resolve those questions before the shipment is collected, particularly if family members and goods travel separately.
Turn the packing list into a usable customs record
Use item or carton numbers, plain descriptions and a separate record for important identifiable items. “Twenty boxes” is less useful than numbered cartons grouped by household contents. Keep recent purchases and anything needing special review clearly identified. Match the name, origin and destination information across your shipment records. Ask what additional detail is required for your circumstances rather than adding invented values or copying another household’s completed declaration.
Travel and shipment are separate preparations
A mover’s transport booking does not decide immigration eligibility or customs treatment.
Separate document readiness from transport readiness
Track who reviews the documents, who sends them and how you know they have been received. Ask the carrier which proposed crossing and shipment process applies to your booking. Keep copies accessible while travelling and give a reachable contact for questions. Do not interpret a booked pickup as proof that the customs file is complete. Agree how incomplete documents, an inspection or changed delivery access will be communicated without promising an automatic crossing time.
Create a U.S. arrival plan before packing
Start with three different dates: when you must leave the Canadian property, when you can enter the U.S. property and when the shipment can be received. A single requested moving date cannot describe all three. Write down the receiving contact and what happens if that person is unavailable. If a lease begins after collection, discuss storage before the goods are loaded rather than expecting the truck to wait. Send photographs of the Canadian loading route and the American receiving route, particularly stairs, docks and restricted loading areas. A familiar city name does not establish whether a large vehicle can use your street or building entrance. Keep the address spelling and unit number consistent across the quote request, shipment inventory and supporting documents. This avoids having several versions of the destination circulating among the people coordinating the move.
Separate the household shipment from other regulated items
Review the inventory for goods that need a separate question before they are packed: vehicles, food, plants, alcohol, firearms, business inventory and items belonging to someone else. Do not hide these items inside ordinary cartons or assume a mover’s willingness to carry a box establishes import eligibility. Ask the receiving authority about the item and the moving company about its transport restrictions. Those answers serve different purposes. If an item is excluded, decide how it will be handled before the final inventory is issued. Keep evidence of the decision with the shipment file. For normal household goods, descriptions should be understandable and consistent with the numbered cartons. “Personal items” repeated for every carton gives little help when the inventory must be checked. A useful list distinguishes kitchenware, clothing, books and furniture without exposing sensitive personal information unnecessarily.
Build a document review file for Form 3299
Use the current CBP Form 3299 and its official instructions as the starting point for an unaccompanied shipment. Read each question in relation to your circumstances; do not copy another household’s answers or select a status simply because it appears common online. Gather the supporting information requested through the agreed process, and identify any unresolved question before collection. If names, travel details or destination arrangements change, ask which documents need correction. Keep a version that records what was submitted and when, without posting identity documents in an open email thread. A completed form is one part of the preparation and does not guarantee admission or duty treatment. Ask who reviews the document package, who can answer questions during transit and how a hold or request for information will be communicated. That responsibility list makes the preparation usable when an unexpected question arises.
Canada-to-USA shipment preparation
Separate personal entry planning from the preparation of your household shipment.
| Preparation item | What to record | Check before moving |
|---|---|---|
| People and goods | Travel dates and proposed shipment dates recorded separately. | Who confirms the shipment sequence with the mover? |
| Destination address | US delivery address, access details and receiving contact. | Can the destination accept delivery in the proposed window? |
| Inventory | Numbered cartons, item descriptions and condition photos. | Can each carton be matched to its contents? |
| US shipment documents | CBP Form 3299 reference and document-request contact. | Have you checked current official instructions? |
| Items needing separate review | Vehicles, food, plants, alcohol and other unusual goods. | Which items need an official agency check before packing? |
| Packing division | Owner-packed goods and professionally packed items. | Are responsibilities and inventory updates agreed? |
| Travel essentials | Documents, medication, valuables and first-night supplies. | Are these outside the moving shipment? |
| Delay plan | Update contact, temporary lodging and alternate receiving plan. | Who approves storage or revised delivery arrangements? |
